Player
of the Week 11/13/15
Andrés
Escobar played for Colombia's national team from 1988-1994. He was a great
defender and was wildly known for his mistake during the FIFA World Cup of
1994. Colombia played America in that first round match. Sadly Colombia lost
and were sent home. Escobar accidentally kicked a shot into his own team's net.
That mistake haunted him and brought him death as he returned to Medellín,
Colombia. During that time violence was coming into play with soccer. Escobar's
death created a sad day in Colombia. He had such talent and was
suppose to be signed to Milan, but his career was cut short due to the violence
in Colombia. I recently watched a documentary on him and I wanted to honor him
this week. Soccer is an escape from violence for most children in Colombia, but
during those years cartels managed those teams. Today it is widely different as
Colombia has progressed. The passion for soccer in Colombia is
incredible.
1967-1994
